This time of year can become quite isolating as the seasons change. Many people struggle with shorter and colder days as we transition into Autumn. However, a good book can change everything! Introducing the Little Free Library! This free community resource is present in over 120 countries, with more than 150,000 officially registered locations worldwide.
What is the Little Free Library?
The Little Free Library is a free, local community managed library that invites people to take a book, donate a book or both! It helps to bring books to all different communities and promotes literacy to everyone, even those that struggle with access or transportation.
How do I donate a book?
The simple answer is to put it in your local Little Free Library! All books in each library are placed there by local community members. There is no formal registration of the books or monitoring. You simply bring a good book and place it in the little library. Almost all of the books donated are used, so do not feel obligated to buy a new book. Part of the fun is reading a book you know someone else enjoyed as well.
A few important notes as you choose a book to donate:
- All Little Free Libraries are open to the public, regardless of age. While the content of the book can span all age groups and genres, make sure that the cover does not suggest anything that may be considered too mature for younger eyes.
- Try to choose a book you (or someone you know) have read. The fun in keeping the library full stems not only from giving access to books, but to books you ENJOYED.
- Consider adding an uplifting note or bookmark to the inside of the book. That way whoever chooses that book will also receive a Random Act of Kindness comment as well!
- All ages are welcome, so look for books for all abilities when choosing what to donate. Have a large print option? Excellent! Have an audiobook? Terrific! Have a board book for a young child? Great!
